We ended up at this place almost by accident. Our family was going to eat at the nearby Koreana restaurant but they were still closed for renovations (the sign said closed till mid-September but it was already October). Rather than drive around town to find another Korean restaurant, we decided to check out what was in the neighborhood. A quick search on Google maps showed this place with some pretty good reviews. This is one of the rare occasions where it was probably a good thing I didn't look at the Yelp rating first (it was only 3 stars).
This small eatery is in a nondescript strip mall. You walk up to the counter, order from the menu on the wall and find yourself a table. The place isn't much to look at but it was clean and the service was friendly and quick. "Torta loca" I think means "crazy sandwich", so I figured that might be their specialty. This is indeed one crazy sandwich! They are like paninis (toasted and slightly crunchy) but huge and have a filling that can contain various meats, melted cheese, tomato, lettuce, sauteed onions, refried pinto beans, etc. We ended ordering a number of different sandwiches including turkey, grilled chicken, and Hawaiian which had some pineapple in it. Despite some initial doubt on my part, these big sandwiches looked and tasted very good. Mind you, they were so big it was almost enough for two people but they were so tasty I finished mine completely anyway. My daughter had the enchiladas which she thought were good also.
I also couldn't help but notice the tasty desserts in the glass case and despite being rather full from just finishing my sandwich, I just had to order a piece of tres leches cake. I just didn't want to deprive my kids of dessert of course :). We shared that piece of cake and boy was it good. One of the best tres leches I have had in a while. I broke my own rule of trying to cut down on sugar and dairy in my diet - it was worth it though.
Despite it being a rainy Sunday evening, a steady stream of latin customers coming and leaving, while we were eating, confirmed the fact that this place serves some excellent food. I will definitely come by again in the future to get me some more torta loca and tres leches cake! -

Because a good friend highly recommend this restaurant and since we were in the neighborhood, we decided to give a try. We ordered 3 carne asada tacos and ordered of 2 cheese and loroco (a type of eatable green flower) pupusas. (These are a El Salvador dish entree-a type of stuff tortilla) My husband had the tacos and he said that they were good. Plenty of meat and cilantro. My pupusas were a good size and very cheesy. Yum!! We also ordered a Medium Hibiscus drink. (This was a homemade drink.) Delicious!! They offered two other mexican drinks: Horchata and Pineapple flavor. These last two type were not homemade- the waitress admitted. The restaurant was small but clean and very friendly. Plenty of desserts, cakes and others options beside tacos. Totally recommend this small, unassuming but delicious restaurant if you are in the Preston HWY area. (KY)

Breaks my heart to write this update. This used to be on of my favorite taquerias on Preston highway. If you have explored some of the taquerias on Preston you will know that is saying something.
I drive by la torta Loca daily. I had not stopped in for a while until today. It became one of those places that was just there for me. I was busy indulging at el molcajete or taqueria mexicana or the new guy super mercado Guanajuato. La torta Loca just kind of got squeezed out of the rotation.
Today I decided to stop in. 12:38 on a Thursday afternoon. I wasn't sure they were open. I went in and the space looks like it's going through a transition and not a good one. The wall menu has been pulled from the wall and rehung upfront. The menu seems to have changed a bit towards taco salads and (gasp) crunchy tacos. Also, I was the only customer.
I ordered a burrito al pastor with everything. The first time I had al pastor here it was a game changer. Marinated pork layered on a vertical spit shawarma style with an onion and a pineapple on top. They don't seem to be doing that anymore. My al pastor was scooped off the flat top, mixed with rice beans and lettuce, topped with mozzarella and thrown into a styrofoam clam and placed into the microwave. I was a little apprehensive to say the least.
My fears were realized. Hot spots here cold spots there. The worst part was the salsa rojo. It wasn't bad but it used to be one of the hottest sauces I've ever received from a restaurant. Not anymore.
Hopefully some new management will get in here and save this place but I'm afraid their days are numbered. -

Their tortas are huge and the tres leches cake is awesome! The place is easy to miss because it's right next to two stores but if you're on Preston check it out.

THIS IS THE ABSOLUTE WORST MANAGEMENT EVER! please don't go here if you have very low tolerance with lack of service, rudeness, etc.
The BOSS needs to get a different license/job. Kicking customer out because they request a straw??? Because they request a plate TO EAT ON!
There's this young girl, who works there and is very very rude. She will complain about you if you're asking "too much" And will get the owner to throw you out of their restaurant. We had order dessert "flan" that they had there, when we had ask for it, she came to our table, threw down the dessert and throw the spoon in our dirty plate, try to tell her boss were asking too much and was very rude. If I was the inspector I will have this place shut down and send them to waitressing class & management class. So they can learn how to treat their own customer nicely, instead of very rude and unprofessionall.
My husband and I come there PLENTY OF TIMES, and tonight we're on edge. If I could rate this place with no stars I would've.
Please be warn.
